As you know last year myself and Vanita Gupta were given awards by the North American South Asian Bar Association. At the time, we were both very much honored and believed that we could work in the future with the organization on racial/social justice issues. We no longer believe this to be the case and in fact believe now that NASABA is more of a detriment to the civil rights of our community than potential benefit.
Many of you know about the events that occured regarding Operation Meth Merchant in Georgia, where innocent, vulnerable members of our community were unfairly targeted by local and federal law enforcement for the supposed knowing sale of products to create meth. Many of us have been working on behalf of the affected community members to assist/support them through the criminal justice and immigration system. Unfortunatly, NASABA has chosen to take a different route. Since the events in Georgia occured, NASABA chose to pursue self-interested responses at the expense of our community members (more info is included in the link below). Many attorneys have chosen to boycott their conference next week in Atlanta as a result. Similar sorts of attorneys and others are now also circulating a sign-on petition.
After you read the petition against the actions of NASABA found here: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/methmerchant/ it is my hope that you will sign on and forward to all South Asian lawyers and advocates whom you know who also would believe that their actions are not consistent with your values and beliefs as progressive members of the South Asian community.
Thanks!
Nick
