AALDEF Job Annoc: Voting Rights Public Education Coordinator

Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Voting Rights Public Education Coordinator

The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), a New York-based organization founded in 1974, protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans through litigation, advocacy, and community education.   A temporary, 6-month position is available in AALDEF's Voting Rights Program.

DESCRIPTION

AALDEF is leading a multi-state public education effort on the federal Voting Rights Act and its impact on Asian Americans.  The Voting Rights Act's language assistance provisions (Section 203) requires multilingual ballots and interpreters in covered jurisdictions, but AALDEF has found many instances of local noncompliance.  In addition, Section 203 and the Act's enforcement provisions (Section 5) will expire in August 2007, unless Congress reauthorizes them.  AALDEF is documenting past and present incidents of anti-Asian voter disenfranchisement to ensure compliance and will educate the community about the impacts of the Voting Rights Act on Asians Americans.

The Voting Rights Public Education Coordinator will help develop and execute this campaign.  This effort will include research, development of public education materials, local presentations, and coordination of several community groups.   This is a full-time position for six months, projected to start August 1, 2006.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have the ability to travel.
  • Good public speaking skills.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of community leaders.
  • Strong writing and research ability.
  • Bilingual ability in either Chinese, Korean, or Vietnamese is helpful but not required
  • Experience in community organizing, running political campaigns, or knowledge of voting rights law is preferred.
