http://www.alternet.org/story/39981
By Robert Parry, Consortium News. Posted August 7, 2006.
George W. Bush and his neoconservative advisers saw the Israel-Hezbollah
conflict as a chance to get the Israelis to spread the war to Syria and achieve
the long-sought goal of 'regime change' in Damascus.

...One Israeli source said Bush's interest in spreading the war to Syria was considered "nuts" by some senior Israeli officials...

Death Toll in Lebanon Reaches 1000; Humanitarian Crisis Mounts As 1/4th of Lebanese Residents Are Displaced
The Israeli military is reportedly planning to ramp up its attacks on Lebanon by targetting more of the civilian infrastructure as well as symbols of the Lebanese government. One military official told the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz "It could be that at the end of the story, Lebanon will be dark for a few years." We speak to Catholic Relief Services representative Mark Shnellbaecher, who suggests that Lebanon could run out of fuel within the week, leading to a humanitarian catastrophe that will not be easily solved by ceasefire alone. Tell Congress: The U.S. needs to stop supporting conflict in the Middle East
If there is to be an peaceful solution in Lebanon and Israel, the U.S. needs to promote a cease-fire and negotiation.
Ask Congress to support an immediate and unconditional cease-fire in Lebanon and Israel, stop U.S. arms flow to Israel and the region, and request a Presidential report on Israel's misuse of U.S.-supplied weapons to kill civilians.
Call or email Congress today >

Health of Young Latinas (1 Letter)
Published: July 28, 2006
To the Editor:
"Young Latinas and a Cry for Help" (editorial, July 21) clearly demonstrates that sexual and reproductive health is a major concern for young women.
The fact that "Hispanic teenage girls attempt suicide more often than any other group," "become mothers at younger ages" and "tend not to complete their education" highlights the urgent need for health care providers, educators and advocates to join the sexual and reproductive health movement to ensure the fundamental right to services for young Latinas.
The experience of International Planned Parenthood across Latin America shows that the high prevalence of unplanned pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections and H.I.V., and sexual violence among this demographic group makes addressing the sexual and reproductive health needs of young people a local and global priority.
Because Latinas are less likely to complete schooling, where they could receive sexual education and counseling, a more comprehensive strategy is essential to provide information and services for them and other difficult-to-reach populations.
