LEGAL ACTIVISTS OF COLOR
News, Events, Actions and Commentary on law and social justice. Welcome to the official blog of the United People of Color Caucus (TUPOCC) of the National Lawyers Guild.
NLG Convention Travel Stipend for Law Students, Recent Grads, &
Legal Workers of Color!
Law Students, Recent Graduates, and Legal Workers of Color!
The 2006 Law for the People Convention of the National Lawyers Guild is set to take place in Austin, Texas, from October 18-22, 2006. We are looking to organize and mobilize sisters and brothers of color to attend the convention, meet and network with each other, and learn and contribute to a movement of progressive legal activism!
Towards this end, the United People of Color Caucus (TUPOCC), the Student Representatives, and the National Executive Committee of the NLG are pleased to announce the availability of travel stipends for law students, recent graduates, and legal workers of color to attend the National Convention in Austin. The travel stipend will cover a portion of transportation costs to the convention. Women of color, queers of color, and disabled sisters and brothers of color are particularly encouraged to apply. We also particularly encourage people of color from the southern region of the United States to apply. The application deadline is September 15, 2006. The application is attached to this email, and will also be made available online at TUPOCC's web page:
For more information on the convention, please check out the information on the following link: http://www.nlg.org/members/convention2006/index.html. In addition to all of the excellent major panels and workshops (many of which are organized by TUPOCC members and allies), the TUPOCC co-chairs are organizing a skills-building session on organizing in communities of color, scheduled for Saturday, October 21. More information on that session will come in the following weeks.
This will also be the time to elect a new TUPOCC co-chair to join Matt Nelson to lead TUPOCC for the next two years! We encourage our comrades of color to think about stepping up to this important position of leadership in the movement of legal activists of color. There are also many other positions of leadership open in the NLG, including regional vice president positions and a national vice president position.
If you need additional funds to attend the Convention and would like some ideas for places to look, please read the message from NLG's Student Organizer, Laura Raymond, included below, for more though ts and a sample proposal students can use to solicit funds from their schools. As always, make sure to check with your local and/or school chapter, as they too might be fundraising and eager to send you to the convention!
In solidarity, and looking forward to seeing you all there,
Ranya Ghuma, Renée Sanchez, y Matt Nelson

Subject: [NLGstudents] Travel Stipend Application and Other Funding Optionsfor NLG Convention
Dear Guildies,
The application for the legal worker, recent grad, and student of color travel stipend for the 2006 National Convention (October 18-22 in Austin, TX) is attached. Please spread the word and let people in your chapter know this is available. Applications must be in by 9/15.
This year's convention is going to be outstanding- check out the details here: http://www.nlg.org/members/convention2006/index.html
We have a line-up of amazing panelists and speakers presenting at workshops on LRAP campaigns, criminal defense and advocacy skills, the drug war, queer rights, immigration work, anti-racist lawyering, international law, military law-- and much, much more. Plus, the plans for the annual student party Friday night and the banquet Saturday night are well underway and sound fantastic! So... everyone should try their absolute best to make it!
In case anyone is thinking of asking their school administration for funding, I am attaching an example proposal edited slightly from what a chapter submitted in 2004. Thanks to them for sharing. If anyone else has proposals or other fundraising options they've used in the past please feel free to forward to the listserv. Also, if there is a local chapter in your area see if they have money to fund law student travel, sometimes this is set aside each fall. You can also ask your Regional Vice-President (if you don't know who this is you can look it up via the search tool on the upper right-hand corner of www.nlg.org) In the past some student chapters have thrown fundraising parties and the local chapter matched what was raised so you could see if people are up for that as well.
Whatever your options, please try and come to the Convention! This is an incredibly important and rejuvenating event. Hundreds of progressive legal workers, attorneys, and students from around the country (as well as from Canada, Latin America, and beyond!) will be there and your networking opportunities will be vast.
Let me know if you have questions about the legal worker, recent grad, and student of color travel fund or other funding.
Hope everyone is having a great summer!
In solidarity, Laura
