Fall Legal & Undergraduate Internships 2006
The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), founded in 1974, is a New York-based national organization which promotes and protects the legal rights of Asian Americans through litigation, legal advocacy and community education. AALDEF launched the New Jersey Asian American Legal Project (NJ-AALP) to address the unmet legal needs of Asian Americans in New Jersey . The main purpose of NJ-AALP is to assist low-income and disadvantaged Asian Americans in overcoming cultural and linguistic obstacles they face when accessing legal aid, as well as to provide an outlet for lawyers and law students to contribute to the Asian American community. NJ-AALP is seeking an undergraduate or law student intern for fall 2006.
Description of NJ-AALP Internships
NJ-AALP focuses on providing community education and free legal services to Asian Americans in New Jersey , as well as community organizing and litigation on employment-related claims to Asian immigrant workers in New Jersey .
- Undergraduateintern responsibilities include community outreach, education, organizing, and client intakes.
- Legalintern responsibilities will also include legal research and writing.
- Intern will be based out of AALDEF's New York City and Jersey City offices.
- Hindi or Gujarati language ability is highly preferred.
The position is unpaid. Interns work anywhere between 8 to 25 hours per week. The internship usually commences with the start of classes and ends in early December.
