AALDEF and One United Michigan Release Toolkit on Michigan 's Anti-Affirmative Action Ballot "Proposal 2"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A New Resource for Grassroots Leaders
In five weeks, on November 7th, Michigan voters will consider anti-affirmative action ballot "Proposal 2" under the deceptive name, "Michigan Civil Rights Initiative." Driven by out-of-state California businessmen, Proposal 2 seeks to amend the Michigan constitution to eliminate affirmative action and outreach programs that target race, gender, ethnicity, color or national origin in public education, public employment and public contracting. If passed, Proposal 2 would roll back progress for both communities of color and women in Michigan , and expand the assault on civil rights perpetuated by California 's Proposition 209 and Washington State 's Initiative 200.
The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund and One United Michigan have released a toolkit for as a resource to both Asian Pacific American and non-Asian Pacific American leaders in Michigan as they educate communities statewide about the likely impact that Proposal 2 would have on Asian Pacific Americans, if passed.
Because misconceptions of how Asian Pacific Americans fit into the issue of affirmative action continually arise, our toolkit Asian Pacific Americans in Michigan and the Anti-Affirmative Action Ballot Proposal, "Proposal 2" is designed as a comprehensive reference on diverse Asian Pacific American communities and affirmative action, and offers relevant but often-overlooked data on employment, contracting, and community health.
