Jubilee Shine, Compton, CA--   Compton needs to return to a local police department for its own safety.  It began contracting with Los Angeles County Sheriff‚s Department for police services in September 1999, under then Mayor Omar Bradley, now sentenced to 3 years in jail on federal corruption charges, paying $14 million a year for 78 deputies.  Mayor and former Compton police officer, Eric Perrodin, last year said he preferred a local force, after a mob of deputies fired 120 shots at an unarmed, mistaken suspect.  The news read: "The videotape shows deputies firing dozens of rounds in the direction of Hayes' [the suspect] vehicle. Some smashed into walls or went through windows of nearby homes. Some ricocheted off the SUV. Four struck Hayes, and one hit a deputy."  Perrodin now claims local cops are too expensive.

The price of Compton life is cheap. When Compton dissolved its force, the Police Department had a budget of about $20 million and about 113 officers, detectives and command staff. It was authorized to grow to 150. There were 80 homocides last year in the city of fewer then 100,000.  Of 345 residents surveyed last year, 189 said they felt "unsafe" or "very unsafe," and 78 said they felt only "somewhat safe" walking in their neighborhood at night.  Sheriffs' deputies come from outside the area and are rotated throughout the county, having no link to their jurisdiction.

In August, 2003, deputies fired 81 shots at unarmed 24 year old Deandre Brunston after putting an attack K9 on him following 30 minutes of negotiation, killing him and the dog, violating all arrest procedures.  (They airlifted the dog to trauma center and left Deandre to bleed until the next morning.)  The order to release the K9 was given over cell phone by Lt. Patrick Maxwell from a Sunday night drinking party over the shouting protest of the K9 officer on the scene, Earnest Burwell, who Maxwell ordered away, and who then quit as deputy, agreed to testify, and is now hiding for his life from his former co-workers.

Lt. Patrick Maxwell was suspended five days in 2003 for killing a suspect who had fled into the San Gabriel River, shooting him with projectiles from land for 3 hours until he drowned.

Maxwell was the lieutenant who decided to use road flares to "burn out" an suspect who had been hiding in a house near Palmdale. The man died of gunshot wounds and burns.

In Torrance in 1990, Maxwell shot and killed an unarmed mistaken suspect who was face down on the ground.

In 1999, Maxwell was assigned as Sheriff Lee Baca's personal assistant and driver.  He was then promoted to head of K9 units for the entire Los Angeles County.

Compton does not need these maurading white supremacist killers.  It needs local control of local cops.

The guy admits he is on the run for murder and repeatedly states he has a gun. He had a million chances to give up but he put his own life and the lives of the officers at risk. His choice. This is the kind of guy that needs to be off the street. This is why we have to have police. Because of people like him that don't care. It has nothing to do with being black, it has everything to do with threatening to shoot police officers and failing to follow instructions (oh an also being a murderer on the run, go figure).

Brunston was not wanted for murder, he was lying. If the cops had bothered to run a background check they would have found this out. The order to release the dog was made via cellphone by the head of the K9 Unit who happened to be drunk at a party that night. Brunston was also unarmed. He repeatedly told cops he would surrender if he could talk to his girlfriend. The cops refused this request. Instead they shot Deanre with 22 bullets and left him to bleed to death on the steps. Just one more of the thousand examples of cops having zero respect for the rights of humans.

For all of you having trouble comprehending this, I am going to make it simple for you:

This guy had it coming. Releasing the k9 was a good idea, regardless of where the decision came from. Shooting at the idiot before the dog even gets there was a really bad idea. Two lives were lost, one needlessly (the dog's life, of course). The LASO acted haphazardly.

The End.
