Job Type: ATTORNEY Job Title: Civil Rights Litigator Schedule Type: Full Time Job Description & Responsibilities: The Mississippi Youth Justice Project seeks a dynamic, experienced civil rights litigator to join our energetic team of children's rights advocates. The Mississippi Youth Justice Project (MYJP), a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, is a non-profit public interest law and policy organization based in Jackson, MS. With a staff of 5 lawyers, two community organizers, two legal interns and an office manager, MYJP uses public policy advocacy, legal representation, and community organizing to ensure that Mississippi's juvenile justice and educational systems are accountable to families and taxpayers. Our work covers a range of activities including public education, media advocacy, training, technical assistance, administrative and legislative advocacy, and litigation. We are seeking an attorney who will represent Mississippi's at-risk public school students and our incarcerated /institutionalized children in class action civil rights litigation. Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications: * Three or more years experience litigating class actions, preferably against prisons, schools and/or other government entities. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills. * Initiative, vision and a strong, demonstrated commitment to the struggle for social justice-preferably criminal justice and/or educational reform. * A non-hierarchical, client-centered approach to advocacy-and a respect for the contributions of community organizers and lay advocates. * Willingness to litigate in the context of a coordinated campaign and to contribute to non-litigation-based strategies, including media and legislative advocacy and public education efforts. * Membership in the Mississippi bar (or willingness to immediately sit for the next Mississippi bar exam).
