City Opens 1st new park named after a Filipina
Victoria Manalo Draves Park honored and celebrated in SoMa
San Francisco, CA -- Supervisor Chris Daly and the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department will host the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Victoria Manalo Draves Park .
WHAT: Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting for the Victoria Manalo Draves Park
WHEN: Friday, October 27th from 3pm - 5pm
WHERE: Victoria Manalo Draves Park on Folsom St. between 6th & 7th Streets
Located across the street from the new Bessie Carmichael School , Victoria Manalo Draves Park is the first new full park to open in San Francisco in over a decade. At 2 acres, the outdoor park includes children and toddlers play equipment, a softball field, a picnic area, and a basketball court. The park will also contain areas for teaching kids about natural systems and the environment.
"The opening of the Victoria Manalo Draves Park is a milestone in the transformation of this neighborhood after years of community advocacy to rebuild Bessie and establish new and much needed open space in the South of Market,” says Supervisor Daly. “This park is also an important effort of the City to recognize one of our very own distinguished women and Filipino - American US Olympic athlete."
“This is a great celebration for our neighborhood and community. Not only is this the first Full size park ever to be built in the South of Market, it is historically named after a great woman who grew up in the neighborhood. It’s definitely an honorable accomplishment of the Filipino community since 1/3 of SoMa’s residents are Filipino.” says Angelica Cabande, South of Market Community Action Network (SOMCAN).
Second generation SoMa resident, Jason Ortega says, “The Victoria Manalo Draves Park and New Bessie Carmichael School are among the great accomplishments of our neighborhood. They provide huge benefits to the community and are identifiable markers of a community’s long history of struggle and victory. The VMD Park is providing a space for Filipino families in SoMa. Thank you so much for giving us a park that is long overdue.”
The new park is named after Victoria Manalo Draves Park , the first woman in Olympic history to win gold medals in both springboard and platform diving events, when she both in the 1948 Olympic Games. Victoria Manalo Draves was born in San Francisco to an English immigrant and a Filipino immigrant father and is seen as important role model to tens thousands of Filipino - American residents of the City and County of San Francisco .
Victoria Manalo Draves who is 81 years old will be on hand to cut the ribbon and be presented a commendation from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
