Hundreds Joined UCLA Rally for Affirmative Action
Los Angeles˜Hundreds of UCLA students and community members from Greater Los
Angeles area marched and held a rally in the University of California Los
Angeles campus while the UC regents held their meeting today, November 15
from 9;00A M in what the students called „ The Day of Reckoning.‰
The rally started with a militant assembly in front of the Royce Hall and
the rallyist marched to the students dorm where the Board of Regents were
holding their meeting.
Representing the underrepresented students being admitted and represented at
UCLA and many of those denied access, speakers denounced the discriminatory
policies that allowed to marginalize our youth for over 10 years with the
Proposition 209 that ended Affirmative Action.
One speaker noted that „ there are only 96 African ˆAmericans new freshmen
and 17 American Indians out of almost 5000 students admitted this year in
UCLA. This is the lowest number in 30 years.
Filipino American enrollment is also going down fast. And more and more
people of color students from underserved backgrounds being denied Access to
UCLA‰
„As the University of California System has failed to produce effective
means to support diversity in higher education (cutting funding to outreach
programs), we the Students and Communities of the Greater Los Angeles Area
rallied to protest this injustice‰, another speaker explained.
Those who joined in the rally were UCLA African Student Union, Movimiento
Estudiantil Chicano de Azatlan (MEChA), Samahang Pilipino,Vietnamese Student
