Court denies attempt to halt deportation
Saturday, December 23, 2006
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has denied an emergency motion to temporarily stop the deportation of a Seattle man who says he will be tortured if returned to his native Saudi Arabia.

Majid Al Massari was employed as a computer technician at the University of Washington School of Nursing when federal agents arrested him in July 2004. The government maintains that Al Massari is a national security threat because of his links to what it calls a terrorist organization founded by his father.

But Al Massari's supporters say the organization is a human rights group in opposition to the autocratic reign of the ruling Saudi royal family.

Paul Soreff, Al Massari's lawyer, said Friday that he would file an appeal Tuesday for an emergency stay of deportation with the U.S. Supreme Court.

"He ought to be able to have a review in court before he gets tortured," Soreff said.
