NCA Demands Immediate Release of Jailed Palestinian Family in Texas

January 2007

NCA Action Alert
Demand Immediate Release of Jailed Palestinian Family in Texas

The National Council of Arab American strongly condemns the unjustified and inhumane jailing of a father, mother and four children being held in separate jails after being uprooted from their peaceful home in Texas during a violent and racist raid by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The Ibrahim family came to the U.S. legally seeking asylum to escape the violence of Israeli Apartheid.

However, in complete disregard for the human rights of the Ibrahim family, ICE ripped 2-year old daughter, an American born citizen, from the arms of her pregnant mother, Hanan Ahmad, and placed her in a foster home. Her mother, Hanan, was later placed in a jail cell with her 5-year-old daughter, Fatem.

ICE also placed the remaining members of the Ibrahim family in separate jails as follows:

7-year old Maryam Ibrahim and her 12-year-old sister Rodaina share a jail cell;
15-year Hamzeh Ibrahim at T. Don Hutto jail in Texas; and
Father and husband, Salaheddin Ibrahim, is being held in a separate jail in Haskell, Texas.

Congressman Sam Johnson,

I am urging you to stop the severe mistreatment and unjust detention and living conditions being inflicted by ICE on the children and parents of the Ibrahim. If the family is to be deported, I am urging you to take action in releasing the Hanan Ahmad and Salaheddin Ibrahim family of Dallas, Texas from the T. Don Hutto jail during their deportation proceedings.

Since November 3, 2006, the family has been forced by ICE to endure severe mistreatment and the continuation of unjust and unfair conditions. Severe mistreatment by ICE includes, but is not limited to: Forcing the family's two-year-old daughter, an American citizen, to live with strangers; keeping the children in jail and preventing them from attending school; unjustly and unfairly separating children from parents - who are not a flight risk; letting the family languish in jail, refusing to allow them to leave pending resolution.

The Ibrahim family, which includes Hanan Ahmad, Salaheddin Ibrahim, their 15-year-old son, Hamzeh, and their 12-, 7- and 5-year-old daughters - Rodaina, Maryam, and Fatem, is being held at the T. Don Hutto jail in Taylor, Texas while they await deportation. As a U.S. citizen, the youngest daughter of just 2-years is separated from her family and living with strangers in a foster home. Not only are the children suffering, frightened and missing their baby sister, Hanan is pregnant and feeling ill.

The Ibrahim family has been honest and forthright with Immigration communicating with them throughout the five years that they have lived in this country. The Ibrahim family came to this country legally about five years ago and applied for asylum. Please take effective action in the near future to stop their deportation, support their asylum petition, and to have them released pending resolution.

Thank you for your support of the Ibrahim family's humanitarian cause and in stopping their deportation from the United States and their release from jail.

Respectfully,
