CCR Fwd: SUPPORT HR 654 -eliminate travel restrictions to Cuba!

centerforconstitutionalrights

Dear [friend of CCR],

The Center for Constitutional Rights needs your support to overturn the embargo on travel to Cuba. Tell your Representative to SUPPORT HR 654 - to eliminate travel restrictions to Cuba! (See more about CCR's Cuba Travel Project here.)

Did you know that it is illegal for U.S. citizens or individuals residing in the U.S. to travel to Cuba without the permission of the U.S. Government? Those who are alleged to violate these strict and narrow regulations, including those bringing medication to children or visiting family members, face penalties of $55,000 or criminal charges.

Freedom to travel is a basic right for any American. It is a necessity, not just for safeguarding our liberty to travel, but also to develop our global awareness and understanding. The regulations on travel to Cuba, which have existed for over 40 years, are ineffective, archaic and unconstitutional.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO OVERTURN THESE UNCONSTITUTIONAL LAWS

Representative Charles Rangel (D-NY) recently introduced H.R. 654 - the Export Freedom to Cuba Act of 2007 - which states, "the President shall not regulate or prohibit, directly or indirectly, travel to or from Cuba by United States citizens or legal residents, or any of the transactions incident to such travel."

This means that students, religious organizations, farmers, Cuban-Americans, performers, tourists, and YOU can exercise your right and freedom to travel to Cuba. While the bill does not lift the regulations on trade and investment, this is an important step in overturning these ineffective and outdated regulations!

WHO SUPPORTS LIFTING THE U.S. EMBARGO? THE FACTS:

-By a 2-to1 margin in an AP poll, Americans favor extending diplomatic relations to Cuba

-In 2005, 182 nations voted in opposition to the embargo and asked the U.S. to lift it. Only four nations voted in favor: Israel, Palau, the Marshall Islands, and the United States.

CCR's Cuba Travel Project is the primary institutional clearinghouse for legal information about the Cuba travel regulations. In addition to providing advice to prospective travelers, CCR represents those who have been accused of violating the ban. CCR attorneys are currently involved in efforts to challenge the legality of government restrictions on the ability of citizens to travel freely and spend their money as they choose. CCR has helped train attorneys to represent individuals in enforcement cases, conducted informational public workshops and published our handbook "Know Before You Go: Restrictions on Travel to Cuba," Which you can download from our website.

Please write your representatives and ask them to support HR 654.

Thank you for taking a moment to uphold the constitutional right to travel and support the work of the Center for Constitutional Rights.

Sincerely,

Vincent Warren
Executive Director
