Groups Demand US Bring Posada to Trial

Washington, Feb 23 (Prensa Latina) A group of organizations demanded on Friday that US justice try criminal Luis Posada Carriles on charges of terrorism, as he was the brains behind the blowing-up of a Cuban airliner in mid flight in 1976.

Speaking at a news conference in Miami, Max Lesnik, leader of Alianza Martiana, pointed out that the United States cannot fight terrorism "without trying one of the worst terrorists who is here in this country as an ordinary wetback."

Lesnik referred to the attempt to only prosecute Posada for migratory violations for the illegal circumstances under which he entered US territory.

On January 11, a jury in El Paso accused the fugitive of lying about the way he entered the country, as well as giving false testimony during the naturalization process.

"He is accused of violating migratory law instead of violating human rights, as he was the driving force behind the sabotage of a Cuban plane," Lesnik pointed out.

Cuban organizations such as Alianza Martiana and the Antonio Maceo Brigade consider Posada a terrorist and believe he must be tried as such.

Paradoxically, this is happening when President George W. Bush has proclaimed himself the standard-bearer of the international fight against terrorism since the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington.

Posada is being held in New Mexico, while Washington ignores Venezuela s request to extradite the dangerous terrorist, who escaped from prison in that South American country.

Judge Kathleen Cardone set Posada s trial for May 10. He is accused of seven charges of migratory fraud and perjury during the naturalization process.

If he is found guilty, Posada might be sentenced to up to 40 years in prison.
