Subject: TAKE ACTION! Sign Petition to Fire Alberto Gonzales

FIRE ATTORNEY GENERAL ALBERTO GONZALES! <http://ga1.org/campaign/petition_to_fire_alberto_gonzales>

Sign the Online Petition and Forward It to Your Friends Alliance for Justice warned two years ago that President Bush's nomination of Alberto Gonzales to be attorney general of the United States was a bad idea.  A long-time Texas political crony of Bush, Gonzales'  performance as White House counsel during Bush's first term in the White House was littered with efforts to subvert or evade the law, and to concentrate power in the executive branch.  We documented those abuses in a report that you can read here <http://afj.org/hot_topic/gonzales0105.pdf> .
"...again, there is no expressed grant of habeas in the Constitution. There's a prohibition against taking it away. ... I meant by that comment, the Constitution doesn't say every individual in the United States or every citizen is hereby granted or assured the right to habeas. Doesn't say that." -Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales "You may be treading on your interdiction and violating common sense, Mr. Attorney General." -Sen. Arlen Specter  (at a meeting of the Judiciary Committee, 01/18/2007 <http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/22/AR2007012201152.html> )

Things have gone from bad to worse since Gonzales' confirmation as attorney general. Under his disastrous watch, Gonzales’ Justice Department oversaw and defended the Bush administration’s illegal domestic spying program, which operated in secrecy for years in violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and was declared unconstitutional by a federal district court. On Gonzales’ watch, the FBI violated of the law and abused its authority under the Patriot Act by obtaining personal information about American citizens.  And, Gonzales suggested in recent testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee that the Constitution does not provide the right of habeas corpus and continues to back the Bush administration’s authority to hold U.S. detainees without judicial review.

Enough is enough.  It is time for Gonzales to be fired for his dismal record of mismanagement, abuse of office, and subversion of law.
