TAKE ACTION: Call Your Senators and Representatives! Tell Your Elected Officials to Restore Habeas Corpus and Defend Due Process

TAKE ACTION: Call Your Senators and Representatives!
Tell Your Elected Officials
to Restore Habeas Corpus and Defend Due Process

Please join thousands of other advocates from organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International and Public Citizen in restoring due process rights to the Military Commissions Act (MCA) of 2006. In coordination with like-minded groups, the Alliance for Justice is asking you to urge your elected officials to fix this egregious circumvention of the Constitution.

As you know, the MCA eliminated the Constitution's due process protection of habeas corpus, the basic right to have a court decide if a person is imprisoned legally or illegally. The MCA allows our government to continue to hold hundreds of prisoners for more than five years without charges, with no end in sight. In addition, the MCA lets any president declare -- on his or her own -- who is an enemy combatant.

Send a message that this is not the American way!

Senators Leahy (VT) and Specter (PA) have introduced legislation that will restore habeas corpus to the Military Commissions Act. Please encourage your members of Congress to co-sponsor this bill.

Attached are a few short talking points to assist you in affirming the right of habeas corpus with your elected representatives.

WHAT YOU CAN DO...Please contact your members of Congress and tell them to defend due process, restore the Constitution, and protect what makes us Americans -- tell them to restore habeas corpus!
