quick follow up-clerkships
hi folks this is just to answer two general questions I have recieved- and I will reply to everyone who emailed me, probably later this afternoon after work.
ok-
1-If you are a 1L you can apply for a summer job with a federal judge in December right before finals and the best part is you don't have any grades yet!!! SO, even if you get terrible grades you might have secured a summer job with a judge, which will help you later in your job search. The downside to working for a judge during the summer is that there is usually no funding for it, it doesn't fall into most school's public interest grant categories, so talk to your school now about how you could do it and what they can do to help fund you.
and VERY IMPORTANT
2- my grades in law school SUCKED!!! (for reals, C's, a D- I did get some A's and B's but that overall GPA was dismal) and I was not on the UCLA Law Review. I was the business editor for a journal my second year and I think that helped. so do NOT give up HOPE!!! No matter what your career counselors tell you, it is their job to help you NOT their job to tell you what you cannot accomplish. There are some really competitive districts and judges who only take 4.0+ GPAs and Law Review kids, but there are alot of judges out there and I am living proof they are not all like that!!! I am even in a competitive circuit, the 9th, which some people at my school did not even think was remotely possible. What is the worst a judge can say to your application? NO, so at least make them-the judges say no- don't let yourself say No and don't let your career counselors tell you NO!
I tried to gear my applications to judges of color, judges who went to state schools, not ivy league, and those who had some kind of public interest or goverment work, since that is my background. and when I did get an interview I was on fire- I was completely boastful and full of myself, NO insecurities came out and I was super confident (on the advice of one of my girlfriends), and why not? No one was born knowing how to do everything and I already know I don't know what I am doing, I am still learning and will be for the next six months is what they tell me.

Subject: [NLLSA] clerkships
Hi Everyone!
This is judicial clerkship application season and I just wanted to put it out there--please apply to be a clerk! We need more people of color as law clerks. As a clerk you get exposed to different lawyer's writing styles and presentation styles, which is great for preparing to practice law. And as an advocate you get to make recommendations to the judge on how to rule and you get to draft rulings and motions. I am a month into my clerkship and I love it.
I don't think I am going to make it to either the NLG or the NLLSA conference this year but I do want to impress upon you all that there are opportunities to clerk.
The Judge I am working for takes applications in the Spring and if you have questions PLEASE let me know! To my knowledge he is the only one in the building who hires law clerks of color here so we need to get good candidates, please spread the word.
EMAIL ME directly with questions about clerking and please let your friends know they can email me too. Anita Garcia at: xolot@earthlink.net
Thanks,
Anita
