CHICAGO, IL - Polls opened today as scheduled at 6:00 a.m., but voting
machines were not functional until about 8:00 a.m. in three majority
Latino precincts in Kane County, IL. During that 2-hour period, many
voters walked away unable to exercise their right to vote. A judge is
set to hear and decide on the matter within the next hour.

³We are asking that the court provide voters that were unfairly turned
away this morning with the opportunity to cast their vote this evening,²
stated Ricardo Meza, MALDEF Midwest Regional Counsel.

The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) is
arguing that voters in these majority Latino precincts were
disenfranchised and is seeking a court order to extend voting in those
precincts for an additional 2 hours tonight.
