Speak up to Defend Social Activism. Animal industry groups, corporations and the politicians that represent them are pushing hard for the passage of the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA), ostensibly to crack down on violent animal and environmental rights extremists.
In fact, this bill may well lead to a crackdown on legal, constitutionally-protected. The sweeping language of this bill could cover boycotts, whistleblowing, protests, media campaigning, picketing or any other activity that “interferes” with the operation of an “animal enterprise” resulting in a loss of profits. The bill also singles out animal and eco-activists for exceptionally harsh penalties based solely on political ideology.
This bill is not about stopping violent actions; existing federal and state laws already protect the industry groups from criminal activity. The real purpose behind it is to eliminate the threat effective activism poses to the profits and power of the animal industry.
