Staff Attorney- Racial Justice



The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation ("ACLU") invites applications for a mid-level staff attorney (5-7 years experience) to work with the ACLU's Racial Justice Program. Attorney will work with an experienced team of racial justice lawyers in the ACLU's New York City headquarters.

The ACLU is a nationwide, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with more than 500,000 members dedicated to the principles of liberty and equality embodied in the U.S. Constitution. The ACLU is a leader in litigation and advocacy to address various problems of concern to racial and ethnic minority communities. The work of the ACLU's Racial Justice Program involves challenges to racial discrimination and issues that have a direct or disparate impact on communities of color. Attorneys work on a broad range of racial justice issues, particularly in the areas of criminal justice, education, and discrimination. In the area of criminal justice, we are dedicated to reducing the unwarranted and disproportionate targeting and incarceration of people of color. In the area of education, we seek to ensure that all children have access to quality education, regardless of race or ethnicity. Specifically, we have filed civil challenges to the inadequate provision of indigent criminal and juvenile defense, pre- and post-9/11 racial profiling, and disparate educational opportunities. We also have done litigation and other advocacy against the racially disproportionate imposition of incarceration and the school-to-prison pipeline.

Position Description: The staff attorney will work on a broad range of cases addressing racial inequality and injustice. The attorney will litigate in trial and appellate courts, both state and federal, including writing and reviewing briefs, motion papers, and affidavits, preparing witnesses and taking and defending depositions. The staff attorney also will provide assistance and advice to senior staff attorneys in the Racial Justice Program, ACLU affiliates, private attorneys, and others who seek assistance. In addition, the staff attorney will research and draft materials for public education; engage in public speaking; and respond to press inquiries. The staff attorney also may be responsible for supervising student interns and support staff. Some travel is required.

Qualifications:

·Five to seven years relevant experience, preferably in constitutional and civil rights;
·Demonstrated commitment to racial justice issues and public interest law;
·Self-motivated and articulate with strong writing skills;
·Capable of complex legal analytical work; excellent legal research skill essential; experience conducting factual research and interviewing witnesses beneficial;
·Knowledge of and interest in civil rights issues related to racial and criminal justice is preferred.
·Ability to travel.

Salary And Benefits: Salary commensurate with experience, within parameters of ACLU compensation scale. Excellent benefits package provided.
