Anti-Deportation Organizer/Associate Director

Founded in September 2002, FAMILIES FOR FREEDOM is a multi-ethnic
defense network by and for immigrants facing deportation. Families is a
lifeline and an organizing center for immigrants and communities across
the New York metro-area. FFF members are primarily low-income people of
color, current and former detainees, loved ones of people being deported
and individuals at-risk of deportation based on immigration status. FFF
provides direct support to detainees and their families, conducts
outreach in the most affected communities, and raises public awareness
about the deportation system and the erosion of immigrants' human rights.
JOB DESCRIPTION
FFF seeks to hire a full-time Anti-Deportation Organizer/Associate
Director, responsible for organizing individuals, families and
communities impacted by deportation, especially deportation for criminal
convictions. The organizer will work with the staff, existing leadership
and FFF's organizational partners and allies to strengthen local
organizing effort in the New York City immigrant community, and connect
our local efforts to the broader immigrant rights and racial justice
movements.
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Develop expertise on deportation system and the role of various
institutional players.
* Assist individuals and families facing deportation through triage and
casework support in criminal cases (the main trigger for deportation),
documentation of criminal and immigration histories, competent referrals
to pro-bono and lo-bono representation, and back-up support for pro se
detainees.
* Build membership base of targeted families through monthly "family
meetings," one-on-one home visits, and leadership development trainings.
* Support members to organize press events, marches, local and national
advocacy days, hearings before elected officials and consular
representatives, and other campaign activities.
* Sustain and foster relationships with neighborhood, city, state,
national and international institutions, allies, coalitions,
partnerships, and elected officials.
* Work with members and allies to develop existing and new
anti-deportation accountability campaigns locally, nationally and
internationally targeting various levels of government (elected
officials, consulates and embassies, the Department of Homeland Security).
* Organize workshops and education campaigns with family leaders on the
issues of deportation, immigration and the criminal justice system.
* Develop communications strategies and outreach to media.
* Assist in fundraising and organizational administration.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
Candidates for this competitive and exciting position must have
excellent interpersonal and communications skills; experience
collaborating with local, regional and national institutions; and a
passion for working intensively with immigrant families organizing
against deportation. Requirements include:
- Bachelors degree or 2 years experience in immigrant rights or criminal
justice fields
- computer and internet fluency
- bilingual or culturally competent in working with Caribbean and Latino
communities strongly preferred
- knowledge of deportation and/or community organizing strongly preferred
