Subject: Save the Date: June 15 is Justice for Janitors Day!!!
June 5, 2007
Greetings Community Member,
I am writing to request your support for our annual Justice for Janitors
march and rally that will be taking place on June 15.
As many of you know, the Justice for Janitors campaign has been a strong
movement in the City of Los Angeles for over 15 years. Justice for
Janitors is a movement of janitors uniting for dignity, respect and fair
working conditions. It is part of the Service Employees International
Union (SEIU) Local 1877.
In 1990, janitors in the Century City high-rise office area of Los
Angeles staged a three-week general strike for improved wages and
benefits. In our June 15, 1990 march, LAPD officers attacked a group of
400 non-violent demonstrators, injuring two-dozen janitors and causing a
miscarriage of one of the janitors. For janitors, that day of blood-shed
is one that is remembered because it represents what many have had to
sacrifice to earn decent wages, health care and other benefits. It is
also the day the community and public outcry marked a shift in the
negotiations with the cleaning companies.
In 2008, the janitors will be going to the bargaining table once again
to fight for better wages, benefits, and family healthcare. This year's
Justice for Janitors march and rally represents a historic statewide
effort to fight for better contracts in 2008. The more people we have
out on the streets on June 15 in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego,
Sacramento and Oakland, the more power we will have at the bargaining
table. More than 15,000 janitors throughout California will be
negotiating new contracts come 2008.
The janitors would appreciate the support of your organization and its
members to join us on June 15, 2007 in our march for better wages and
benefits and to remember the janitors that fought and struggled in
1990. We would also like to further build the solidarity amongst our
organizations and would like to continue to be supportive of your
organization and its activities. Can your organization contact us in
the next week and let us know how many people from your organization can
join us?
I am attaching a flier that we are using to outreach to the community,
politicians and labor organizations. Please forward to everyone in your
organization.
