Taxi Workers Alliance to Join NYC Central Labor Council
with
Bhairavi Desai, Executive Director, New York Taxi Workers Alliance
While not defined as employees under the law, the 26,000 mostly immigrant
taxi drivers in NYC have the same problems as other workers such that taxis
are called sweatshops on wheels. And they have the same solution – solidarity.
They have joined hands for many years in the Taxi Workers Alliance which has
been a militant advocate for their rights. Now the NYC Central Labor Council
has reached out to them and the Taxi Workers Alliance plans to affiliate with
the central labor body realizing that the greater our solidarity the great our
strength.

TWU Local 100 Presidential Candidates Debate
with
Roger Toussaint, Michael Carrube, Anthony Staley, and Ainsley Stewart
Four of the five TWU candidates debated last week in a election set to begin
on Monday. The opposition candidates to incumbent President Toussaint
criticized not only his conduct of the transit strike but the proposed settlement
which is still in arbitration.They were especially critical of the health care
contribution of 1.5%. Toussaint maintained he exercized strong leadership in a
tough battle "against very bad people" and that none of his opponents had
displayed any accomplishments.

Eye Witness Solidarity Mission to Korea
with
Jose Schiffino - NY Area Activist for Union Rights & Justice in Colombia
and a Rep. of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions(KCTU)
A large U.S. delegation of trade union & anti-war activists is visiting South Korea
to witness the impact of U.S. neoliberalism and militarism against the people of
Korea, & stand in solidarity with the Korean people in their resistance against the
Korea-US Free Trade Agreement and the U.S. military base expansion in
Pyongtaek. This will further militarize NE Asia and put Korea at increased risk of
war, as well as displace farmers from their ancestral land for the benefit of foreign
powers.They are going in the middle of mass demonstrations and strikes by the
KCTU, leading to a General Strike on Nov. 22 to stop trade union repression,
legislation further exploition of workers and the Korea-US Free Trade Agreement
negotiations.
