U.S. PLANS TO BUILD NEW MILITARY HQ IN QATAR


ABU DHABI - The United States plans to build a
permanent military headquarters in Qatar.

Officials said U.S. Central Command would construct a
forward operations headquarters in the Gulf as well as
South Asia and Central Asia.

They said the new facility would replace the U.S. Army
presence at A-Sayliyah

"Qatar and the U.S. are cooperating towards building a
new headquarters for the U.S. Central Command," U.S.
ambassador to Qatar Chase Untermeyer said. "Camp
A-Sayliyah has been the temporary base for several
years."

Untermeyer told a news conference in Doha on Nov. 14
that Qatar and the United States would jointly operate
Al Udeid air base.

Al Udeid was expanded and upgraded to accommodate U.S.
Air Force combat and support planes.
