This lame duck can do lasting damage
Jane & John Doe,
The environment may have won on Election Day but this
polluter-friendly Congress is not gone yet. And they can do a
lifetime of damage to America's environment in the next six
weeks.
The upcoming lame duck session is their last best chance to
enact key pieces of President Bush's "drill, log and burn"
agenda.
We must be fully prepared for the allies of Big Oil and other
industries to load up their final budget bill with everything
from drilling in the Arctic Refuge to logging in America's wild
forests.
NRDC needs your immediate support to stop any eleventh-hour
assault on our environment during the critical post-election
period.
Please make a donation today that will enable us to spring into
action and mobilize massive opposition at the first sign of
legislative attacks: http://www.savebiogems.org/yearend/1106b
Here are just a few of America's last wild places that could be
on their hit list over the next important weeks:
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Allies of Big Oil have been
signaling since summer that a lame-duck session would be their
last chance to open our greatest wildlife sanctuary to oil
drilling.
The Western Arctic Reserve: Powerful members of Congress want to
overturn a court ruling that blocks drilling in world-class
wildlife habitats, so that the Bush administration can turn this
wildlife treasure into another sprawling industrial zone of
pipelines, rigs and waste sites.
Wild Forest Heritage: Senators are scheming to override a court
decision and launch an invasion of chain saws into wild forests
from the Sierra Nevada to the Appalachians.
Other dangerous measures would allow logging in the Giant
Sequoia National Monument . . . threaten endangered species of
wildlife . . . and weaken clean air and clean water rules.
The final weeks of this Congress could prove devastating for our
natural heritage unless NRDC can respond swiftly and decisively
to any and all attacks.
Please help ensure that we are fully prepared by sending an
emergency donation today:

Your gift will enable NRDC to stay on high alert -- allowing us
to mobilize nearly one million online activists, dozens of
experts and our lightning-fast media operation.
Please help ensure that NRDC can remain vigilant in defense of
America's environment right up until the day the new Congress
takes office.
Sincerely,
Frances Beinecke
President
Natural Resources Defense Council
